WHAT ARE: Appliances, Electronics and Tool Labels

Appliances, tools, electronics, and power equipment encompass a broad range of products designed for both consumer and industrial applications, and for use in indoor and outdoor environments. Appliances include products such as dishwashers, refrigerators, and stoves, while tools and power equipment range from handheld drills to outdoor equipment such as snowblowers.

Regardless of size, function, or end use, all of these products require labeling to support manufacturing processes, component traceability, inventory management, and consumer safety and instructional information.

Label Performance Requirements

Given the critical role labels play, they must remain highly legible throughout the entire product life cycle—including manufacturing, distribution, sale, and end use.

Labels applied to appliances, electronics, and tools are exposed to a wide range of potentially harsh environmental conditions, including:

Because of these demanding conditions, manufacturers often require the label material and thermal transfer ribbon to be tested together to verify long-term durability and performance.

UL 969 Compliance

UL Standard 969 defines safety and performance requirements for marking and labeling systems and establishes standardized test methods to evaluate durability. When a labeling system complies with these requirements, it may be listed under the UL Component Recognition Program.

It is important to note that a thermal transfer ribbon alone is not UL recognized. Instead, UL evaluates and recognizes the complete labeling system, which includes:

For UL recognition, the printed image must remain legible on the label, and the label itself must remain securely adhered to the surface for the life of the product.
